Exhibition: Making Things

Making things: an exhibition of doctoral work in progress

Art, Design and Museology studios, UCL Institute of Education

24-29 Jan 2015

The Art, Design and Museology group has a thriving doctoral community with 15 students currently registered for MPhil/PhD and EdD programmes of study. Making Things presents the work of 5 of these students: Judith Brocklehurst, Sean Curran, Alan Cusack and Annie Davey, all of whom are currently exploring the potential of practice-based methodologies in their doctoral research.

This approach to practice builds on our innovative MA programmes in Art and Design in Education and Museums and Galleries in Education, which enable students to explore the process of making not only as the object of educational research but as a mode of educational research in its own right. Tutors have developed innovative assessment strategies that have encouraged students to submit practical, creative work in fulfilment of their thesis since 2003 and the first practice-based PhD at the Institute of Education was completed by one of our students in 2011.

Together, students and tutors continue to develop a progressive research community which encourages a discursive and experimental approach to scholarship in the arts.

My work consisted of a zine, a protest banner and a sound piece
